The greatest harm caused by silicon to the human body is silicosis. Caused by long-term inhalation of large doses of silica (SiO2) dust. Silica dust enters the respiratory tract and is engulfed by lung macrophages, releasing active factors that stimulate fibroblasts to synthesize more collagen. Silica dust can also stimulate macrophages to release lysosomal enzymes, destroy the proteins coated on the SiO2 surface and expose damaged cell membranes. It can also initiate lipid peroxidation, generate free radicals, damage or even kill macrophages, and dead cells. Can stimulate adjacent fibroblasts to synthesize collagen. Silica dust is released again and is phagocytosed by other macrophages to produce more collagen fibers. As time goes by, the disease progresses and causes silicosis. Miners, tunnel workers in various metal mines, masonry workers in the refractory materials industry, glass products and quartz grinders, and sand cleaners are all more likely to be exposed to silica dust and develop silicosis. Due to the vigorous development of dust prevention work, the incidence of silicosis has been significantly reduced, but it has not yet been completely controlled, and it is still one of the most important occupational diseases in my country.
